Cultural policies in a time of war
The Russian war on Ukraine is also an existential war against Ukrainian culture and history. Putin’s army has targeted Ukrainian identity – stripping the country of its many museums. Local film archivists have taken on new roles in a fight to preserve Ukrainian films – they now organize film screenings in the Kiev metro, where people are seeking shelter from Russian artillery. This war is, more than ever, being faught through propaganda – via social media, broadcasting and cinema.
This year's festival will screen a variety of Ukrainian films and documentaries, all of which help us understand what it means to live in the middle of a war. This panel will ask questions about the function of culture and film in the ongoing war in Ukraine – and how Swedish politics can, and should, relate to the role of culture in our society.
The panel will be moderated by Swedish journalist Hynek Pallas, who will be joined by a number of knowledgeable politicians and filmmakers, including Ukrainian Ambassador Andrii Plakhotniuk, Anette Novak, CEO at Swedish Filminstitute, Christina Tynkevych, director of »How is Katia« and Lesya Kalynska, producer for »A Rising Fury«.
